How FOR ME TEES Came To Be – A Story of Empowerment

Every once in a while we all feel blue. No one is immune really. Everything might be going smoothly and then for one reason or another you’re suddenly off your game. Or maybe you’re in a funk that you can’t shake and with each passing day, the light at the end of the tunnel seems more and more elusive. Long or short term, the blues or all out depression, I’ve experienced both more than once and through various tricks and therapeutic tools, I work myself through it and once again emerge on the path to living my best life.

Once upon what seems a lifetime ago, I was struggling extra hard during COVID lockdowns. I took to my old standby of meditation. It usually does the trick. But on that particular day, every time I opened my eyes I went right back to ‘blue’. I couldn’t “OMMMM” my way out of this one.

So I wrote all kinds of love on my hands. ‘You are worthy.’ ‘You are love.’ ‘You rock.’ ‘You’ve got this.’ ‘It all worked out.’ Two hand-washings later the messaging was faded and forgotten – the perfect description for the way I was feeling.

Then I had an idea. I took one of my old tee shirts and wrote ‘You’ve got this.’ in big letters on the chest. But I wrote it UPSIDE-DOWN so that while I was wearing it I could read the message more easily. Then I added, in caps and with more gusto, ‘IT ALL WORKED OUT PERFECTLY!’ and ‘I AM POWERFUL’ and ‘I LOVE YOU!’ and ‘WHAT TESTS ME, I CONQUER!’ Everything upside down.

I can’t even begin to explain how empowered I felt  – and it was immediate! AND CONSTANT! The human brain is amazing. Even more amazing is the heart/brain connection because I literally got heart flutters and tingly when I read the messaging again. Even seeing it in my peripheral did the trick!

Right then and there, I decided to create a line of tees so that other women in my boat could feel the same transformation that I had experienced. I came up with FOR ME TEES™ because the perfect response to someone asking the wearer why the messaging was upside-down would be “Because it’s FOR ME!”
